Paul Stone and Ken Watkins, Clinical Directors of Blackhills Clinic were delighted to welcome over 180 delegates to the first Blackhills Dental Symposium on Tuesday 27 November 2012. The facilities and arrangements provided by Perth Racecourse were excellent and this proved to be a great opportunity for GDPs and DCPs to gain some free CPD. The programme was designed to be relevant for all members of the dental team (clinicians, PCDs and management/clerical staff) and with a keynote presentation by Ashley Latter.Read More
It is well recognised that for the majority of patients, the maintenance of periodontal health can be managed by most GDPs (1998 Adult Dental Health Survey). However, periodontal disease is of insidious onset and its presence can easily go undetected, especially in less obvious cases, such as smokers.
The survey also revealed that 60% of Scottish adults had visible plaque on their teeth, with 47% having periodontal pocketing of 4mm or more.

Evening Meeting - Tuesday 20 March 2012 - Blackhills Clinic
Periodontitis results in destruction of the periodontal attachment leading to periodontal pockets which can be very deep. Non-surgical periodontal treatment will help resolve many of these lesions, but in some cases this on its own is insufficient. Periodontal tissue loss can also manifest as gingival recession, either as a consequence of periodontitis or due to toothbrush abrasion. If this occurs in the ‘aesthetic zone', the longer clinical crowns can be quite unsightly for the patient. Advances in periodontal regeneration have now made it possible to predictably regenerate lost periodontal tissues, helping to eliminate residual pockets and gingival recession.
Every practice has patients who would benefit from periodontal regenerative treatment and the opportunity to see how you can integrate this into your daily clinical management should not be missed. The presentation will be given by our Specialist Periodontist, Dr Marilou Ciantar at Blackhills Clinic.
The aim of the evening talk is to outline the indications for periodontal regeneration and discuss the mode of action of using regenerative materials such as Emdogain®. 2 hours verifiable CPD.
PLACES FOR THIS MEETING ARE NOW FULL.
If we have sufficient numbers interested we will arrange another date - please email Trudie Imrie to confirm that you would like to be informed if a further date is arranged (firstname.lastname@example.org)Read More
Donald graduated from the University of Edinburgh in 1994. After working in practice in Edinburgh and the Dental Hospitals in Bristol, Edinburgh and Glasgow he trained in Dental and Maxillofacial Radiology in Glasgow and Dundee. He has been a Consultant in Dundee Dental Hospital since 2006 where his main interests are the investigation of salivary disease and cone beam CT.
Donald also has considerable experience teaching and examining undergraduate students and postgraduate dentists in the UK and abroad. He is a member of the British Society for Dental and Maxillofacial Radiology and the International Association of Dental and Maxillofacial Radiology and a member of the central council of the European Academy of Dental and Maxillofacial Radiology.
Blackhills Specialist Referral Clinic is pleased to announce that Dr Julie Kilgariff (Specialist Endodontist) has now joined their team and will be providing endodontic treatment for all suitable patients in a fully equipped, state-of-the-art endodontic surgery.
Julie qualified from Dundee University in 2000 and held a number of posts within the dental hospital and in the salaried services. In 2005 she began postgraduate training in endodontics at Dundee Dental Hospital and gained registration on the specialist endodontic list with the General Dental Council in 2009.
She currently works as a lecturer in restorative dentistry at Dundee Dental Hospital and also runs postgraduate endodontic courses; it is her intention to run similar courses at Blackhills Clinic.
Julie is happy to receive referrals for all endodontic problems including: de novo cases, root canal re-treatment, cases with persisting signs or symptoms, calcified and blocked canals, open apices, perforations, separated instruments, posts/fractured posts requiring removal and periradicular surgery.
Julie brings the total number of registered specialists at Blackhills to six and can be contacted to receive referrals by letter, email (email@example.com ) or via our website online referral form click here. Please include a periapical radiograph with the referral if possible.
In October 2010, Paul Stone accepted the position of President of the European Association for Osseointegration. The EAO is one of the most highly regarded implant associations in the world and has members in over 40 countries. The EAO intends to be the "leading voice in Europe for implant dentistry" and with over 3500 attendees at the recent annual scientific congress in Glasgow is probably already a reality.
Paul was Scientific Chairman for this international event which brought together clinicians from over 65 countries and an invited educational faculty of speakers and moderators from all over the world (including Hong Kong, Australia and the USA). The theme of the congress was ‘Controversies in Implant Dentistry' and as Paul explained:
There are now many different methods of treatment, some with very little scientific evidence to support them. As the Scientific Chairman, I was very keen to bring some evidence-based solutions to show how much more information we now have about the most predictable ways to treat our patients."
Colleagues can therefore be assured that their referred patients will be treated in a specialist environment with the most appropriate and well-documented methods available.
Ashley Latter -what an experience!! We hope all who took advantage of the free 2 hour "taster" on Thursday night felt that Ashley gave a first night performance and moved everyone "out of their box".
Ashley as some of you may know has been providing help for dentists for many years as an "ethical selling coach". His background is in sales and marketing and his previous experience includes being a senior training coach for Dale Carnegie prior to venturing into the dental market. His seven point plan enables an improved uptake of treatment plans for patients and is a win win situation for patient and dentist.
His course held over two days for the team at Blackhills went through various scenarios and examples of how to approach patients to find out what they really wanted. He suggested solutions for difficult situations and we divided into groups for "role play" to help practice listening and questioning techniques.
He was entertaining and informative and we look forward to welcoming him back in May 2011 for updates and more advanced training.
Look out for details of this course being advertised early in February.
The dental publications full of news of different ‘awards’, so readers might be pleased to hear of the recent accolade won by the Blackhills team. In May, as part of the ongoing Blackhills continuing training, the clinic was closed for three days while all the staff and clinicians attended the National Congress of the Association for Dental Implantology (Paul Stone was also a member of the Congress Scientific committee).
At the Gala Dinner, the theme of ‘all things American’ brought extravagant fancy dress, but none as eye catching as the whole of Blackhills Clinic, who scooped the coveted prize of ‘Most Outrageous Fancy Dress: Team Award’.
The deliberate avoidance of all ‘industry awards’ has been part of the Blackhills philosophy, but perhaps this award is one worth bragging about!!
Marilou Ciantar is our Specialist Periodontist at Blackhills and she is happy to accept referrals for periodontal treatment.
She is prepared to help establish treatment plans for periodontal patients, where the referring dentist is involved in the 'shared care' of their patients. Marilou has extensive expertise in all areas of periodontal treatment and can make a significant difference to the long term prognosis for many teeth.
To help introduce herself to dental colleagues, Marilou is willing to arrange 'Lunch & Learn' events with practices or groups of practices.
For further information, please contact Marilou at Blackhills.
The arrival of the latest generation of CT scanners (the first in the country) has brought about a fundamental shift in the diagnosis and treatment planning for all patients. Scans are obtained in the clinic and reconstructed in three-dimensions in just a few seconds. The radiation dose is the lowest of any equivalent scanner (approximately just one conventional OPG radiograph), but the quality and quantity of information obtained provides extraordinary detail. Patient monitor screens in all surgeries allow the visualisation and discussion of the images, together with ‘virtual surgery’ for implant placement.
The Sirona Galileos CT Scanner (www.sirona.com) has been a major capital expenditure for the clinic, but all who use it are impressed by the contribution it makes to dental care. Dental practitioners from other practices are now sending patients to Blackhills for CT scans to assist with complex treatment planning. No additional software is required for this, as the 3D images include the necessary ‘viewer’ and are copied to a disk for immediate use by the referring clinician. Blackhills can also advise on the use of a specialist imaging company, where a Radiologist will report on the scan data obtained and assist where reconstruction and templates are required.
