What is a Biopsy?

A biopsy is a small surgical procedure to remove a tiny sample of cells or tissue from your mouth to diagnose the cause of mouth lesions. The cells or tissue are examined closely under a microscope to determine whether they are abnormal and guide treatment.

This procedure is carried out in the pathology department at Nuffield Health in Glasgow, who we have worked closely with for many years.

Biopsy Key Details

Here's everything you need to know about undergoing a biopsy with Blackhills Dental Clinic.
Procedure

Biopsies are a small surgical procedure that usually take 15-30 minutes on average. They are performed under local anesthetic, making the procedure painless.

The area may require stitches, which are often dissolvable, and you may experience minor soreness or swelling for a few days after the procedure. This soreness can be controlled with over-the-counter medication.

The sample is sent off for analysis and results are usually available within 1-2 weeks.

If you are referred to Blackhills Dental Clinic, we will inform your dentist or doctor of the result, if required.
