What is a Dental Bridge?
A dental bridge is a fixed restoration used to replace one or more missing teeth. The restoration is anchored to the natural teeth or dental implants on either side in order to fill the gap.
Bridges are custom-made to match the shape, size, and colour of your natural teeth. They help to restore your bite and chewing ability, as well as the natural look of your smile.

Types of Dental Bridge
Fixed Bridge
A permanent restoration that requires one or two of the teeth on either side to be partially reduced in size in order to fit the bridge over the top. Fixed bridges are cemented into place and cannot be removed by the patient.
Maryland Bridge
This type of bridge requires minimal reduction of the surface of the tooth and can only be used towards the front of the mouth, where the biting forces are less. A Maryland bridge is made up of a false tooth and metal wing which is cemented onto the back of the adjacent tooth or teeth on either side.
The Treatment Process
Consultation and Examination
During your first visit our dentist will carry out an examination of your mouth, take X-rays, and discuss your treatment options. Factors like gum health, jawbone density, and the condition of adjacent teeth will determine your suitability for dental bridges.
Tooth Preperation
The abutment teeth are reshaped to make space for the bridge. Local anesthesia is typically administered to ensure comfort during this procedure.
Impressions and Temporary Bridge
Impressions of your teeth are taken to create a custom bridge. While you wait for the permanent bridge to be made a temporary bridge may be placed to protect the exposed teeth and gums.
Fitting the Permanent Bridge
Once ready, our dentist will carefully fit the permanent bridge. While doing so they will check your bite alignment and ensure it is comfortable before cementing it into place.
Follow-Up Visit
A review appointment may be required to reassess the bite, make sure your bridge is functioning well and check for an excess cement that may cause gum problems.
