What is a Crown?
A crown is an artificial restoration that fits over the remaining part of a prepared tooth, making it strong and giving it the shape of a natural tooth. Crowns are an ideal restoration for teeth that have been broken, or have been weakened by decay or a very large filling. A crown can also be used where there are discoloured fillings, to improve the appearance of the tooth as well as where a tooth has had a root filling and will need a crown to protect what is left of the tooth.
The Treatment Process
Consultation & Preperation
During your consultation our dentist will examine the tooth, possibly taking X-rays to detect if there are any signs of decay, infection, or bone issues. The tooth will then be reshaped by removing a small portion of enamel to make space for the crown. If the tooth is severely damaged, a filling or build-up may be carried out first.
Impressions
A digital scan or impression will then be taken of your tooth in order for a custom-made mould to be made. This allows a precise model to be created so the crown fits properly with your bite and neighboring teeth.
Temporary Crown
A temporary crown is placed while your permanent one is being fabricated.
Crown Placement
At your second visit, our dentist will remove the temporary crown and check the permanent crown for fit, shape, and colour, before cementing it securely in place.
Dental Crown FAQs
1. Is getting a dental crown painful?
No. The procedure is done under local anesthesia, so you shouldn’t feel any pain. Mild discomfort may occur after the procedure, but it’s usually manageable with over-the-counter pain relief.
2. How long does the process of getting a crown take?
Traditional crowns require 2 visits with our dentist, with the appointments typically about 2–3 weeks apart.
3. Will my crown look natural?
Yes, modern crowns are designed to blend seamlessly with your natural teeth in both shape and colour.
4. Can crowns be whitened?
No, crowns don’t respond to whitening treatments. If you want a whiter smile, consider whitening your natural teeth before getting a crown fitted.
5. What should I do if my crown feels loose?
If your crown ever feels loose or comes off, contact your dentist immediately. Do not try to fix it yourself.
6. How long will my crown last?
Dental crowns typically last 10 to 15 years, but this depends on the health of the gum and tooth underneath.
7. How should I look after my crown?
Maintaining good oral hygiene is key to extending the lifespan of a crown. Make sure to brush twice daily and floss regularly, avoid hard foods like ice or hard sweets, and visit your dentist regularly for checkups and cleanings.
