What is Direct Access EMS Hygiene?

Direct access appointments allow you to visit our hygienist without visiting your dentist first. During the appointment our hygienist uses an advanced EMS hygiene machine, particularly using Airflow technology and Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT), to provide a superior, non-invasive, and comfortable dental cleaning experience. The machine uses warm water, air, and fine powder to painlessly remove plaque, stains, and tartar from teeth. EMS Airflow hygiene appointments are more comfortable than traditional scale and polish appointments, as the machine effectively cleans above and below the gumline to prevent issues like plaque build-up and gum disease, making it safe for implants and ideal for sensitive teeth.

Treatment Process

Here's what to expect from your EMS Airflow hygiene appointment at Blackhills Dental Clinic.
Oral Examination

The hygienist will firstly check your mouth and gums. This may include checking gum health, looking for plaque and tartar build-up and measuring gum pockets if needed. Once the have examined your mouth they will discuss any concerns like bleeding or sensitivity.

A special coloured solution may be applied to your teeth prior to cleaning. This solution highlights any plaque or areas that need extra cleaning.

The clean will begin with a gentle stream of warm water, air and fine powder that removes plaque, surface stains and soft deposits around gums and teeth.

This stage is more comfortable and less sensitive than traditional methods of polishing.

If there are signs of hardened tartar, known as calculus, the hygienist will then use an ultrasonic scaler. This scaler gently removes the hardened plaque and tartar under the gumline. Not every patient needs to go through this step.

Lastly, the hygienist will check that all plaque and tartar have been removed from the teeth and gumline. They may also smooth the tooth surfaces and apply fluoride if needed before asking you to rinse your mouth.
