What is an Implant Secured Denture?
Dentures that are not stable or very well-retained can benefit from the use of dental implants to help secure them in place, greatly improving function and comfort. A denture retained on implants is called an “overdenture” and can also be referred to as a “removable bridge”. This means the patient can remove the overdenture as and when they need, as it is not fixed into place.
The Treatment Process
Initial Consultation
Our dentist will firstly assess your oral health and take an X-Ray, before taking initial impressions of your teeth, known as moulds. These impressions are sent to a trusted laboratory to begin creating your denture.
Try-In Appointment
In order to fit the veneer(s), your teeth need to be prepared first. The dentist will remove a thin layer of enamel from the front surface in order to create space for the veneer so it looks natural and not bulky. A temporary veneer may be placed while the final ones are being made.
Final Denture Fitting
Once adjustments are made and the desired appearance is achieved, your final dentures are returned to the clinic. Our specialist will then clip the denture into place on the implants.
Follow-Up Visit
A follow-up appointment is required a few weeks after placement to review the denture. An X-ray will be taken, allowing our dentist to make any necessary adjustments to ensure comfort and proper bite alignment.
Implant Secured Dentures FAQs
How is it different from a traditional denture?
Unlike traditional dentures that rest on the gums and may shift, implant-secured dentures snap or clip onto your implants. This reduces movement, improves comfort, and enhances chewing ability.
How many implants are needed?
Most patients need 2–4 implants per arch for a secure fit, though the exact number depends on bone density and individual needs.
Is the procedure painful?
Implant placement is typically done under local anesthesia, and most patients report only mild to moderate discomfort afterward, which can be managed with medication.
How long does the treatment take?
The full process can take several months, as the implants need time to fuse with the jawbone before the final denture is attached.
Can I remove the denture?
Yes. Implant-secured dentures are removable for cleaning, though they remain firmly in place during daily activities.
How do I care for the denture?
Daily brushing of the denture, cleaning around the implants, and regular dental check-ups are essential to maintain oral health and longevity.
How long do implant secured dentures last?
With proper care, implants can last decades. The denture portion may need replacement or adjustment over time due to normal wear.
