What is Root Canal Treatment?

Root canal treatment involves removing any damaged nerves, or pulp, from a tooth’s root canal. Root canal treatment is necessary when the pulp in the centre of the tooth becomes irreversibly damaged. This can be caused by decay, injury, a chip or crack in the tooth, or placement of an extensive restoration such as a deep filling or crown which can lead to inflammation and infection, often causing pain and discomfort.

The Treatment Process

Here's everything you need to know about undergoing root canal treatment at Blackhills Dental Clinic.
Consultation & Examination

During your consultation our dentist will examine the tooth and take X-rays to confirm infection or damage inside the tooth. They will also develop a treatment plan on how best to remove the damaged pulp.

Once local anaesthetic has been administered and the area has been numbed, the dentist will make a small opening in the top of the tooth to reach the infected pulp and root canals.

The infected pulp and any bacteria is removed from the tooth and the root canals are carefully cleaned and shaped. To ensure that all canals are found it is essential that a microscope is used, to magnify and illuminate the root canals.

Once the tooth is clean and infection-free, the root canals are filled with a special rubber-like material. This helps to seal the canals, prevent bacteria and infections from recurring and strengthen the tooth internally.

After the root canal is complete, the tooth usually needs a permanent restoration, such as a filling or dental crown to provide protection and strength. The dentist will discuss your options before deciding the best course of action.

Root Canal Treatment FAQs

Is root canal treatment painful?

Root canal treatment is performed under local anaesthetic, so the procedure is usually no more uncomfortable than a filling. Most patients do experience some mild soreness and tenderness after the treatment, which is normal.

A root canal is required when the inside of the tooth becomes infected, inflamed or damaged. Root canal treatment helps to save the natural tooth instead of removing it.

On average, most root canal treatments take between 60 and 90 minutes per visit. They are often completed in one or two appointments, depending on the tooth and infection.

Some patients may need a crown after a root canal to help strengthen the tooth, prevent it from cracking and restore its normal function.

Yes, but it is recommended to eat only soft foods at first and avoid chewing on the treated tooth until it is fully restored.

Most patients feel normal within a few days of getting root canal treatment, although slight tenderness when biting is common for a short time after. This will pass over time and is manageable with over-the-counter medication.
