What are Veneers?
Veneers are thin porcelain covers that are placed on the front of teeth in order to change the colour, shape and appearance of teeth.
They are often used to treat chipped, stained, misaligned, or unevenly spaced teeth, offering a durable and permanent solution.
The Treatment Process
Consultation & Assessment
At your first visit the dentist will examine your teeth and gums by taking X-rays before taking impressions (moulds). You will discuss your goals, in terms of shape, colour and alignment before making your tooth shade selection. This information, along with the impressions, is sent to a trusted dental laboratory where your veneer(s) is created.
Tooth Preperation
In order to fit the veneer(s), your teeth need to be prepared first. The dentist will remove a thin layer of enamel from the front surface in order to create space for the veneer so it looks natural and not bulky. A temporary veneer may be placed while the final ones are being made.
Bonding
The veneers are firstly checked for fit, appearance and bite before they are fitted with dental cement. If the fit is not correct, the veneers are sent back to the dental laboratory for modifications. It may take several visits to get the appearance and fit correct.
Final Review
A review appointment may be required to reassess the bite and fit of the veneers. The dentist will also make sure there is no excess cement, as this can cause problems with gum health.
Dental Veneers FAQs
1. Am I a suitable candidate for veneers?
If you have discoloured, chipped, broken or uneven teeth, veneers are a great option to change the shape and appearance of teeth while providing natural results.
2. Does getting veneers hurt?
Most patients experience little to no pain, as local anesthesia may be used during preparation.
3. Are veneers permanent?
Veneers are not technically permanent in that they do not last forever, but the process is irreversible as a portion of the tooth’s enamel must be permanently removed in order to fit the veneer. They are a long-term solution, with porcelain veneers lasting up to 10–15 years.
4. How long does the process take?
The process of getting veneers typically takes 2-3 visits over a few weeks.
5. How should I care for my veneers?
In order to look after your veneers, make sure you brush twice daily and floss regularly. You should avoid biting hard objects and wear a night guard if you grind your teeth in order to prevent the veneers from chipping.
